I have been waiting so long to take the twins to their great-grampa's junkyard for a portrait session. I was just giddy with excitement the day of the shoot. There is so much color, texture, so many great props, and great lighting that I was on sensory overload (in a good way)! The shot above is one of my favorites--love the color and patina on that old car. Next year when they are walking and talking we will go out again and venture further into the photographer's paradise! Can't wait!

The Event: McGill & Edwards Wedding
The Date: August Thirteenth, Two Thousand Eleven
The Venue: Pine River Recreation Club

Jake & Sara had a wonderful wedding day, despite mother nature and her sassy self. A change of venue had to be made early in the day that took the wedding from a beautiful green field with soft, rolling hills and a rustic barn wood "archway" to the indoor location of the reception hall. With the help of family and friends the hall was transformed into a sweet wedding venue. I met up with the guys at the recreation club early in the afternoon and we had a great time taking "the guy" pics. Soon, it was time for the bride and her entourage to arrive in a sleek, white limo. The ceremony was quickly underway and was executed almost without a hitch (Sara couldn't get her bottle of sand open, and the minister remedied the situation with his pocket knife). We were looking forward to some beautiful outdoor photo ops after the ceremony, but again mother nature "rained" on our parade and all pictures were taken inside. The weather did clear up later and I took Sara and Jake outdoors for a little fun and we captured some gorgeous portraits. Thank you Jake & Sara McGill!

A Boy's 4th Birthday Party!

We had a great time on Drew's 4th birthday. Cat in the Hat, Big Boy and lots of friends and family made the day a roaring success for one four-year-old little boy. His big gift was a trampoline from Mom and Dad which we surprised him with first thing on his birthday morning. He said the night before he wanted a really big present, bigger than his room! His cake turned out better than I anticipated which was nice surprise...we appreciate everyone who was involved and all of the birthday wishes on Facebook. We had his party in the garage this year and Mike spent a lot of time cleaning the garage and painting the floor, which believe me was something that has needed attention since we moved in over eight years ago! Happy Birthday Drew! We love you!

A Pretty Dress + Ballerina + Angel = One Sweet Little Girl!

I had a great time in the studio with little Miss A yesterday! We played dress up with my awesome tutu and headband from Anything Crafty by Leslie and the Angel Wings & Halo set. We made great use of my new and improved strobe studio and my natural light studio. I have been experimenting with the natural light side of things this summer and am really loving the results. I decided a change was in order and cleared out my studio, then brought things back together with the end result being a natural light area and a strobe area. Both are actually new to me because I have always used continuous lights with the indoor studio and only use natural light outdoors. I will let the pictures speak for themselves...check out this sweet little baby girl!

A Momma and her Babies...

After leaving GG's the other day, Drew and I happened upon a sweet momma deer and her two adorable fawns. I pulled up to the corner, looked for cars and instead spotted this trio standing in the grass. I backed up (yes, I made sure there was no one behind me) and parked at the side of the road. I hopped out of the truck, opened the back door and rummaged for my camera. Drew and I were headed to the lake so my truck was piled high and I literally had to crawl over things to find my camera bag and haul out my camera. I had a fixed lens on, not a zoom, but decided it wasn't worth the hassle to change at that point. I walked towards them and they seemed interested in me and not particularly scared or nervous. I snapped a few pictures and slowly walked toward them--then decided I needed my zoom if I really wanted to get a good close-up. I was thinking there was no way they were going to wait around for me to change lenses and come back for another shot...but, guess what, they did! I felt very honored that they chose me to take their family portrait that day. Thanks Deer Family!

A red Chevy pickup truck, a covered bridge, a perfect bride and groom, and two fun families made the wedding a one-of-a-kind event. This event was simple, elegant and amazing. We took wedding portraits before and after the actual wedding which means much less stress and more time to get those great shots. Wedding...Lunch at Maxfield's and off the following day on an Alaskan cruise with their closest friends. Woot! Congratulations Jenny & Jason.

A Bride...A Groom...A Fairytale Theme = the makings of an awesome wedding day for Amanda & Ryan Trecy. Mix spicy pink dresses with rich chocolate brown tuxes and you have a sweet color treat. Everything about the day was gorgeous, including the weather which turned around and was perfect. The ladies started their day preparing at Colorworks hair salon while the guys chose to get ready at the chapel. All of the planning, stressing, preparing and waiting ended as the beautiful bride and her father entered the sanctuary...the ceremony was poignant and beautifully executed. The reception, which included a candy buffet and "sweet" table center pieces had the guests "sugar buzzing" while awaiting the arrival of the bridal party. Everyone had a wonderful time celebrating this special day for Ryan and Amanda. Congratulations and Happily Ever After!

I am loving my Lightspere by Gary Fong. I love the way the light is filtered. I have had it a while and have not used it, but decided to bust it out at my friend's daughter's 8th Birthday Party last night. Even though it is large, even though it looks like "a tupperware bowl" (not my quote), even though it's not the most convenient to store away discreetly---I LOOOOOVE IT!

Now, a few pics from the party that was at The Menu Manager in Midland. The Menu Manager is an awesome place and the kids had a great time! They had Quesadillas to eat, made Lasagna to take home, had cookies to dip and decorate and take home also. They made a recipe book and had loads of fun.

Drew finally scored a train set. Our first sale of the season and he came home with a train set, a farm set and several movies. He has been wanting a train, but he has the table train set we gave him last year for Christmas, so we really did not think he needed another train...but garage sales being...well, inexpensive shall we say, how can you not!? Of course, who has room for them to be set up all the time--so we will be setting up, taking down, setting up, taking down... Since we are having our own garage sale this week (Tues-Thurs) hopefully I can eliminate some things from "garage sales past" to make more room. I can't let Drew know I am getting rid of anything, he always says "no thank you" when I ask if there are any toys he would like to donate to the sale...

Let's just suffice it to say that I will never be watched on "Cupcake Wars." Drew wanted to make cupcakes the other day, so I rummaged around the cupboard, didn't find a box cake mix...decided we would look up a recipe online. I found one that sounded good and simple enough from scratch...Cream Filled Cupcakes! I proceeded to get out the ingredients, bowls, measuring cups/spoons, etc. We started to make the cupcakes (and I use the term "we" very loosely, since my boy decided I could handle the project on my own this time--even though it was his idea). I made the cake batter and attempted to pour/spoon/ladle it into the paper wrapper things. I believe it took me 10 minutes to fill 15 holes--and not one of them was the same height--and I don't know when it is half full or 1/4 full or 1/3 full once you start filling it up--who knows!? Once they were in the oven I began whipping up the "filling." Everything went fine with this except that I was interrupting my fellow baker's "show" with my loud beater. Cupcakes out of the oven--they did not bake evenly since, well, they were 15 different heights! Let them cool, went back to the "filling" and searched for something, anything--well there has to be something! I can use to poke a hole in the bottom of this dang cupcake and squeeze the filling in---but alas--there was not. So, filling became frosting and wo-lah! Cupcakes!

Wow! The bunny pictures were awesome this year. The kids looked adorable and were GREAT with Beavis. Some wanted to hold him while others preferred he just sit nicely by them. Butterflies at Dow Gardens 2011

Took a little venture over to Midland yesterday...The hubs wanted to go over and look at my brother-in-law's new property and see how it was survived the deluge of water we received. I told Drew he needed to get dressed, brush his teeth, comb his hair, wash his face, etc...and he of course said "Why?" and I replied because we were going some place, he of course said "Where?" and I replied, "Midland." He said "Oh! to see the butterflies?" and I said, "Well yes, that is where we are going." So, we filled Daddy in on the addition to our itinerary and off we went. I had no idea how tired he was and on the way there he was being very quiet, so I was turning around to say, what are you doing sleeping back there? and guess what--he was! (That rarely happens, believe me). So, we went to check the property, put gas in the truck, went through Subway drive-thru, then to Dow Gardens parking lot to wait and eat. He finally woke up after sleeping about 45 minutes and was ready to go in. It was a great adventure!

Part One:
I placed an order with the Home Shopping Network (and let me assure you I have only done this like 3 times in my life). They asked for my email address...I hesitated (thought about my in-box being inundated with thousands of HSN promo emails) and said that I did not have one. So, 5 or 6 days go by and I am anxiously waiting for my order to arrive. I am starting to get concerned...I haven't received any emails from HSN...no order confirmations, no shipping updates...NOTHING! What if they lost my order, what if my order was never even processed--why haven't I received emails telling me with great detail every step that my order has taken from the time I hung up the phone with the nice lady from HSN to now. Then....it FINALLY dawns on me--I refused to give them my email address! THEN I realize there WAS a time before email, before in-boxes, when people used to wait for their shipments to arrive with every confidence--and no email confirmations. We were not notified when the shipment left, when it was expected to arrive, when it was delayed--we just went on blind faith that it would be delivered! Huh--imagine that, and my package came the next day! Wow--what a concept!

Part Two:
Now, about the package. Early one morning I went to the basement to fill the pellet stove. I clicked on the TV so Drew could watch PBS and the HSN channel was on...I heard things like: make-up, bullet-proof, no raccoon eyes...they had me at "hello." Needless to say, I ordered "mally" makeup--had no clue who the chick was/is--a makeup artist for the stars or something. Anyways I hesitated slightly, my little voice telling me I was a "SUCKER" if I dialed that phone number...but I muzzled the voice and dialed the phone. Had a nice lady talk me through the ordering process and several anxious days later (see above) my mally makeup arrived. I LOOOOOOOOVE it! And am sorry I didn't take them up on the offer to buy two more months supply at the same price. This make-up rocks! They even sent me an extra mascara and lip pencil to "share the love" which I did with my niece Brooke. It does everything she claims it will and more! A Holla' out to my girl Mally. (I don't normally "holla'" at anyone, but she deserves it!) LOL

My hubs and I made a trip to Norman Camera shop in Grand Rapids last Saturday. (My friend and fellow photog pal Leilani Tucker has been raving about this place, well, ever since I met her! She also recommended I buy the lens that we were on our way to purchase. We finally found time in our schedule to take a road trip to GR and buy the lens. Each time the Nuvi had us turn on another road that brought us closer to our final destination it amped up my excitement another notch. Finally we arrived--MECCA! I hopped out of the truck and went right in (they were quite busy) and we had to wait a bit for someone to help us...I strolled over to the tri-pods to while away some time. Soon, hubs gave a holla and it was TIME! I scurried over to the counter, boldly told the man what I would like...the Canon 2.8 24-70mm L series lens. Finally it was in my hands. I slipped it onto my camera body, snapped a couple of pics and said "I'll take it!" He gave me a quick look, and I explained that I had already tried it out by renting one from Lens Giant, so I knew that it was for me. I felt like a star, on the way out other customers were looking at me, nodding their heads, telling me it was a great purchase, a good choice, that I would love the lens. Wow! Can't wait to go back and get my tripod--the Manfrotto! Thanks Hubs for believing in me and gifting me with this wonderful lens!

I am very excited about the new direction that Fisher Photo is headed--taking photos of all of their events and sports programs. A Collection...

I was recently driving home and noticed this colorful collection of...well...some sort of farming equipment trailers. I don't know their exact name, but that isn't the point. The point is, the sun was shining, the sky was a brilliant blue and the mixture of colors on these trailers lured me in and I just happened to have my camera with me. I always think I should have my camera with me at all times because I never know when a photo op will jump out in front of me...but...well...it's usually not the case. But, on this particular day--I happily grabbed it out of my bag, slammed on the brakes (not really) and started shooting. Hope you find them as interesting as I did!

Something Random...

Sometimes you just see a random object placed somewhere...haphazardly...and it suddenly strikes you how perfect the placement was! Take for instance this little alien that was found years ago by my nephew Haden in the treasure chest at La Senorita. I held onto it cuz I thought it was really cute. Then my son was born, so I thought he should have it. I have picked it up off the floor many times over the past few years and put it on his dresser, in a drawer, on the head board, on a shelf in his lockers...and the last time I just happened to place it on the computer on his dresser inside his rocket-shaped silly band...days later (today) I was cleaning his dresser and it struck me as...well...quite amusing that the alien was inside a rocket ship. Call me crazy, but I had to take a picture and share it with you! :)

Preschool...the first day...we all survived quite happily!

Today was the boy's first day of preschool and he loved it! He had no problem wishing Daddy and I farewell. "What? You two are still here? Goooo already!" That is my interpretation of the look he gave us, anyways! He hugged us and said good-by and went back to playing with his toys. So...Daddy and I left for a whole two-and-a-half hours before we had to be back to pick him up. I guess I can handle 2.5 hours for 2 days a week--he probably wishes it was longer. We picked him up and Daddy had a "surprise" for him...a Nerf football...then we all went to lunch at the Shepherd Tavern...then home for some tossing-around the ball...and then a 2.5 hour nap. Aaaaah...another landmark survived...now if I can just get thru the first day of Kindergarten as smoothly...

What have we been up to? The boy had a pre-party party the Wednesday before his birthday with our friends. We went to Culver's for food, cake and presents--then to Island Park where we got caught in the rainstorm that eventually flooded MP. We were home safe and sound before the flooding, thank goodness! We have taken in two Loons games over the past two weeks. Our boy is a big fan of Lou E. and "B Ball" games and most importantly the play area at the stadium. Friday we "showed" Buddy in a pet show at Warwick Living Center where G.G. (great grandma) lives. Buddy was the biggest and barkiest dog there. There were seven entrants and Buddy won "Best in Show" (of course, every dog was given an award). Drew had a great time and thought it was lots of fun...and so it goes...

Ludington camping trip...

We had a great time in Ludington camping a few weeks ago. The boy did not believe we were really camping because we were in a motor home not "in those blue things with sleeping bags." His idea of camping is tents and sleeping bags. We had lots of fun on the beach--where we made "sand angels" along with our sand castles, and at the marina pool with grampie and we saw a big Coast Guard ship and lots of fun at the community playground and went on bike rides and watched the Badger come in made s'mores by the campfire...

Three Years Old...

A Birthday Boy! A Birthday Bike! A Birthday Cookie Bouquet! A Birthday Cake! A Birthday Party! A Trip to Big Boy for "those corn things!" All made for a Three Year Old Birthday Extravaganza! Saturday morning started with grammie and grampie coming out to the house to see the boy get his birthday surprise--a new bike! Then, the doorbell rang and a box arrived--inside was a cookie birthday bouquet from Aunt B. and Uncle T. in Texas. Later, lots of Friends and Family showed up to celebrate with us and made for a great time. We had balloons, dogs-on-the-grill, a choo-choo train cake, homemade ice cream, presents, the jumper, and lots of fun! The evening ended with us watching a movie and falling to sleep exhausted. The next morning we awoke and the first thing said was "let's go to Big Boy for breakfast and get "those corn things!" So off we went to Big Boy and had a great breakfast to end the birthday party weekend. Whew!

He did do his own hair for his third birthday party...he said "look mom, I used my bubbles and your brush!"

They're still living...

When we returned from our camping trip in Ludington my niece left me a note which included "your flowers are still living." That struck me as comical...I asked her to water them while we were away. Generally when plants see me coming at the "plant place" they either hide or try to look as wilted and sickly as possible, so I won't choose them. (giggle) I try to pick plants that are low maintenance, because I know how I am when it comes to watering...or not...and feeding/fertilizing--what's that? So, yes, plants live a devilishly dangerous life at my house--their life is a precarious balance of being over-watered or under-watered or just generally forgotten about. So, yes...the plants are "still living"...thriving...no...never that! Well, maybe I am being too harsh, they may have windows of time where they "thrive" albeit very narrow windows. When winter arrives I am sure they are relieved to be put out of their misery. I did receive a nice plant from my husband and son on mother's day this year, and my sister who has green thumbs, fingers, hands and arms, gifted me with some wonderful plants and flowers this year. I warned her they may not survive...but so far they have. And we even grew some flowers (a total of 3 survived out of about a dozen) from seeds that my son got in an Easter egg hunt with his friends this spring...and so it goes...

The aforementioned "mother's day plant" that attracts hummingbirds--during the brief times that it has "thrived" and actually kept some of its blooms, that is...

don't let this one small bloom fool you...its the only one the poor thing has--no wait, it has two...or three...

I think these would have been blooms...had they not dried up and blown away?

We had a quick thunderstorm blow through the other day, and I couldn't resist going out and taking some shots of the flag, the rain, and the pinwheels...one of these days I will blog some of my "real portrait work" again, but for right now I am just having some "summer fun!"

After 2 or 3 days of mom and dad saying "push the pedals down," "no, push the right foot down on the pedal," "yes, that one, push...push it down again..." "you've got it now--no the other one, push the other one down..." Tee-hee! Well, on the third day he hopped on his bike and "CLICK!" he had it! Now we're saying "wait for me, hey slow down...wait--watch out...hey did you hear me--slow down!" Aaaaahhhh...and so it goes...next year it will start all over without the training wheels...or do I get two years before that happens?

the Ol' Restaurant building...

This rather plain, but sturdy building was built for my husband's grandparents and opened for business as a restaurant in the late 1940s. It has been called many names over the years..."the restaurant," "the ol' restaurant," "the restaurant building," "the shed." To me it has always been a mysterious treasure of times past. What was it like in its heyday? Who were its customers? How many stories and secrets did the walls hold? I can imagine my grandmother-in-law bustling around in the very small kitchen in the back and bringing out wonderfully prepared "good home-cooked meals." It was transplanted after its illustrious career as a restaurant to the grandparents homestead a few miles away and has been used as a "storage shed" for many years. It has been painted and repaired over the years, but time has a way of leaving its mark and I love its weathered and tarnished appearance. You will see that it is still very colorful and photo-worthy... (hopefully I will find a picture of when it was in business --gramma says it's in an album somewhere at her place...)

Wedding Bells & Wedded Bliss

My niece was married on Saturday, May 15, 2010. Their three children were in the wedding, and were adorable. The wedding and reception went great, the weather was perfect, and we had a wonderful time. We ate, drank and made merry...until 9:00 pm when Dad and the boy went home, my mom and I really lived it up and stayed until 11:30 pm (wow, huh!).

The boy and I enjoyed a leisurely train ride to MP and back on a gray, soggy morning during the Maple Syrup Festival. He had a great time and kept hollering "All Aboard!" We rode in the top of a two-story car on the way to MP and switched to the lower section on the return trip. We then rode the ponies and played in the park for a while...then Daddy showed up and we headed down to the rides...

Dandelions...Weed or Flower?

I don't really care if they are weeds and/or flowers--I like them! I know, I know, everyone wants to rid their yards of them in the spring, they spread like wildfire across lawns everywhere. But, to me they are a sign of spring and warm weather and summer days ahead. Plus, what other weed or flower can you get twice the fun out of? Who doesn't remember smearing the bright, yellow, buttery flower on siblings, cousins and friends? Then, when they turn into fluffy, puffy, white balls, you can send them off into the wild blue yonder...

VIP for an afternoon...

I had the honor of being a VIP for the afternoon today. At my nephew's request I went to his school as his VIP. We had a great time-- eating lunch together, meeting some of his friends and teachers and seeing some of his work. He read some awesome stories he had written and I had a VIP necklace he made me to wear. His favorite thing had to be his "cootie catcher" which I guess I am out of the loop on, because I never heard them called that. You know the things you make with paper and it has numbers on it, and you choose numbers and they fold it back and forth, then flip up the final number you choose and it says something underneath...it was a wonderful time and we both had a lot of fun!

Either you love them or hate them, but if you live in Michigan, you can't help hearing about them this time of year. I LOVE them and a shout out to my brother Kail and my nephew Heath for finding these the other day. I enjoy "hunting" for them, but I just as readily enjoy having them "hunted" for me. Nice big white ones, and a few darks...Delectable!

Birthday portraits for one two-year old, and two one-year olds! What fun! The little angel is my one-year old nephew. He spent the night at our house and first thing in the morning I took him down to the studio and started snapping away. That probably explains some of his less-than-overjoyed looks. My two-year old little guy came right in, sat down and got'r'dun! His dad helped him out with the promise of a tickle-monster which really made him smile. Dad sat in for a couple pictures and so did Ky-Ky. My one-year old little miss, was ready to show me her spunk from the moment she arrived. What a sweetheart she is! Don't let the serious face in the first photo fool you...she was giggling, and hollering and whooping it up! Whew!

We went to a card party a while ago and my husband loooooved this "dip" that a guest brought. He found out who made it (turns out it was a co-worker's wife) and was given the recipe. It is really delicious, so I thought I would share...and it is very easy to make. A really good idea to serve it with Scoops though, the "dressing" is very watery. Enjoy! :)

We went outside to play the other day and had lots of fun! The boy wanted to slide (on the neighbor's slide--thanks neighbors!) and then "cook" back in his playground area...and SWING and SWING and SWING! He kept saying "higher mom, higher!" He is a lot more adventurous than last summer and it's not even spring yet!

This little guy made me giggle throughout his session. He is soon to be two years old and is a boy who knows what he wants! He helped choose props and decided how and where he wanted to sit and was very helpful cleaning my studio with the "duster!" He called me gramma the entire time, and his mom assured me he calls every lady he meets that! Hmmmm... What a sweetheart!

The other day, the dogs and I decided we would brave the wind, cold and snow and go for a walk. I decided to take my camera along, in case we came upon anything of interest. We weren't going very far, just out behind the pole barn and around the field, but you never know! The dogs always seem to find something new and interesting to sniff or chase even though we have been around that field a thousand times...why should a girl with a camera be any different?

I had a great time taking portraits of Allyson. She was willing to try "most" of my posing suggestions, even if she was tired. Sleepy or not, her pictures turned out amazing! She is a beautiful girl and she has a sweet little boy who joined the session for a few poses.

I really do applaud all of those who have run off and joined the circus and have an act that can make-the-cut! Those performers work hard and earn their money as far as I am concerned. They were giving camel rides among other things out on the floor before the start of the show. The "camel lady" as I will call her, had her two children out there in the middle of the ring in a stroller while she gave kids rides on her camel. The children were probably 8 mos and 2 years of age, and they behaved themselves in the stroller for a good 20 minutes or so before mom had to take them to the monkey cage where they stayed during the rest of the circus. Ha! Just kidding! I saw them later with a babysitter/nanny type person. Anyways, we had a wonderful time at the Shrine Circus at the Dow Event Center in Saginaw on Sunday evening. Drew had fun, but didn't enjoy it quite as much as we were expecting him to! His favorite thing was riding the ponies during intermission. (Oh! and I have no idea why Drew is lolling his tongue around in most of the pictures :)

I did make a resolution to blog more often this year and it hasn't happened yet, but I am NOT giving up hope! My friend Leilani so sweetly encourages me by mentioning that she hasn't seen a new blog post in a while--what she is really saying is "get off your ass and do something woman!" So, I will make the excuse that I was in Texas for two weeks this month, AND I am currently reorganizing my office and house AND I do have a 2.5 year old, 3 dogs and a husband to keep me busy! But, enough of that--Here are a mishmash of photos that I took while in Texas... Enjoy!

I have been taken this little girls pictures since she was about one year old. I think this was our best session to date. We ALWAYS manage to get GREAT pictures of her, she just likes to make it a bit challenging and keep her mom and myself on our toes! LOL

I will try to make my blog posts closer together, as my phello photographer friend Leilani has told me that I should post once or twice a week, not a month! We'll see how that works out... :)

Had a GREAT day on Saturday doing Pet Portraits at our vet's office--Animal Health Associates in Mt. Pleasant. They were celebrating their 10th or 20th anniversary with an Open House and asked me to offer my services for pet pictures. It was so much fun and all of the animals were adorable. I did 20 dogs, one cat and one ferret (a first for me!). Enjoy the pictures...

These handsome guys were rescued by a very nice lady, the one on the left looks just like our Buddy...

I've never been around standard poodles before, but these three made me realize what great dogs they are...

And the one curious cat named Oscar...

These are three wonderful therapy dogs... very well mannered and sweet!

It took this little guy numerous dog treats and a peanut butter cookie before he would sit still for a photo...he was so full by then he had no choice!

These three...Bo, Luke and Roscoe (mmmm hmmmm, that is their real names) were a rambunctious trio! Wow, so much energy and playfulness in one small room! Thank goodness for two helpers and lots of dog treats. They all belong to one of the assistants at the vet's office. She is a very brave girl! :)

Saturday, October 10, 2009 was a beautiful Autumn day...
After several days of rain and cool weather --sunny and in the fifties was perfect for photos...
Myself and two of the Cutest Kid Contest winners and their entourage met at Dow Gardens in the afternoon for some picture takin'. Unfortunately our Grand Prize Winner was sick and could not be there for the fun.
